THE WOODLANDS, Texas - There’s nothing more rewarding than serving those who serve others. As the saying goes, “What goes around, comes around.” Military troops, and their families, were served lunch, entertainment, and prizes, at "Military Family Day" at the Sam Houston Race Park, Sunday, July 19. Organized by the National Charity League (NCL) Bluebonnet Chapter with participation from The Woodlands and Magnolia NCL chapters, attendance was estimated at 1,040.

Community outreach program served over 1000 who serve our country.

The Military Family Day is a collaborative community effort to show appreciation to those who preserve our freedom. This has become a much-anticipated event that has grown over the past few years that now includes two battalions and their families...the 1-133D Field Artillery and 72nd Special Troops Battalion.

The battalions were treated to barbecue, beverages, live music, and a boo-coo of fun which included the ever-popular cake walk and photo booth by Party in a Box, a midway of games and booths of activities, inflatables, and even a tug-of-war between the two battalions for bragging rights.

Congressman Kevin Brady of the Texas 8th Congressional District sponsored the event. Community sponsors are also excited to provide their goods and services to benefit our military and their families. Kroger provided lunch consisting of brisket, sausage, beans and crazy potatoes (a signature dish of the event’s chefs). Kroger also provided volunteers to serve lunch. The World Champion cook team of Pitt’s and Spitt’s provided their culinary skills, Constable Ryan Gable and his son cooked 300 hot dogs for the children.

The event was successful in large part by the legions who pitched in and helped. Anadarko Petroleum Corporation not only provided funding, but many of the volunteers. Other community contributors included: Coca-Cola, D'Ericson Photography, First Choice Emergency Room, North Texas Sports & Embroidery, Montgomery County Precinct 3 Constables, and The Woodlands Convention and Visitors Bureau. A special vote of thanks to Martin Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram and Sam Houston Race Park for covering the majority of the venue expense.

Live music entertainment was provided by the renown Ramon Torres, one of the most recognizable voices in The Woodlands. Torres took a moment between sets to post a message to his Facebook page…

“Playing for a Military Family Day @ Sam Houston Racetrack. God Bless our troops!” posted Torres.

An all expense paid weekend getaway for two, a $625 value, was donated by The Woodlands Resort and Conference Center and Anadarko Petroleum Corporation. In total, sponsors donated more than $60,000 in goods and services.

Military Family Day is an outreach program for the NCL chapters of The Woodlands. In 2013, the organizers from the Bluebonnet Chapter previously organized a District 10 (16 NCL chapters) Military Family day as part of the National Philanthropy Initiative to serve our military.District 10 was awarded a National Innovative Award for this project for incorporating community support.

”Field Artillery and Special Troops Battalion have been serving our community since 2009 by participating in the 4th of July parade as military dignitaries. It’s an honor for NCL to be able to reciprocate by serving those who serve us,” said Anna Anklam of the National Charity League (NCL) Bluebonnet Chapter.
