THE WOODLANDS, Texas – The Woodlands Children's Museum has announced a new plan to increase access for all to its space dedicated to creative and educational play.

Angela Colton, executive director, explained that the nonprofit museum has joined “Museums for All,” a signature program of the Association of Children’s Museums (ACM) and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to encourage families of all backgrounds to visit museums regularly and build lifelong museum habits.

The program will enable low-income families to visit The Woodlands Children’s Museum for a minimal fee of $3 per person with the presentation of an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card. Families can also visit any participating museum year-round for a minimal fee.

The Museums for All initiative represents a long stride toward the goal of reaching more children and parents, especially those living in poverty, with the valuable learning resources of museums while allowing children’s museums to further expand their reach and impact.

Kara Portilla, educational outreach coordinator for the museum, said that Museums for All is part of The Woodlands Children’s Museum’s broad commitment to seek, include and welcome visitors of all types – and to continue to provide access to as many individuals as possible to a wide array of educational resources.

The nonprofit started at first as a museum without walls. From its Woodlands Mall location, The Woodlands Children’s Museum moved to its current 11,000 square-foot location in the Panther Creek Shopping Center off Woodlands Parkway in July 2010. This year marks the fifth anniversary at the current location.

The museum’s mission does not stop inside the facility’s walls and includes a number of outreach programs.

The Woodlands Children’s Museum also has joined in several national initiatives that promote health through community outreach programs.

“Museums for All is the newest initiative the museum has joined,” Colton said. “Because of Kara Portilla’s research and commitment to our initiatives, we have learned that this is a perfect fit for us – and we are, in fact, the first museum in Texas to participate in this program.”
