This special edition of Arts in the Park will feature live entertainment including Texas Brass, Let Them Drum and other local performers. The event will culminate with an awe-inspiring patriotic performance by the Woodlands Symphony Orchestra with Wayne Watson. In addition to the stage entertainment, attendees can also view and purchase goods crafted by local artisans. Children will enjoy a Kids’ Zone featuring bounce houses, activities and more. Bring your lawn chairs and picnic baskets to “Celebrate Freedom in The Woodlands” at Arts in the Park on Saturday, September 12, 2015; from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Lodge at Rob Fleming Park in The Woodlands. This is a free, family-friendly event with fun for everyone.

“This collaboration with the Woodlands Symphony and Wayne Watson has been over a year in the making beginning at Chapelwood UMC when I was called in at the last minute to assist the orchestra on a Sunday morning,” said Bayer. “Wayne’s charm, professionalism, songwriting and leadership touched me in such a way, I just had to approach him and ask if he would like to perform with an entire symphony. His immediate respond was that exact concept had been a dream of his since he was an 18 year old college music student in Louisiana.”

Wayne Watson has written and recorded numerous contemporary Christian songs, of which nearly two dozen have reached the top of the charts. He has won a dozen GMA Dove Awards in his singing/songwriting career. His hit “For Such a Time as This” became a centerpiece theme of the CBS-TV series Touched by an Angel. In 2011, he was inducted into the Christian Music Hall of Fame. Watson is now the associate director of music at Chapelwood United Methodist Church in Houston along with writing new songs and performing world-wide.

Artistic Director Darryl Bayer helped form the original Woodlands Symphony in 1993 while working at The John Cooper School. He held the principal trumpet chair for the entire first fifteen years of the orchestra until 2008. Following the financial downturn or what Mr. Bayer calls, “a long five-year-intermission,” Bayer began to rebuild the orchestra backed by local musicians and former patrons. The Woodlands Symphony Orchestra is comprised of quality musicians from the Woodlands region including Magnolia, Tomball, Conroe, Spring and Oak Ridge. It is designed to be an orchestra that does more than merely provide musical entertainment to local residents; it also encapsulates the entire unique essence of The Woodlands area. Use of technology along with open-air nature concerts makes the WSO unique and interesting for all ages.
