THE WOODLANDS, Texas - For over 37 years, Mann Eye Institute and Laser Center has been bringing quality eye care to patients, specifically known for its accomplished LASIK and cataract specialists, as well as its general eye care services. Now, with 10 locations in Houston and surrounding areas, and two offices in Austin, Mann Eye is a leader in ophthalmology and vision correction while keeping patients as their number one priority.

See like never before at Mann Eye Institute and Laser Center

For one doctor, the Mann Eye Institute and Laser Center is more than just a place of work: it’s a family affair. Dr. Paul Mann, MD, is the son of Mann Eye’s founder, Dr. Mike Mann, MD, FACS. Although Dr. Paul Mann always knew he wanted to become a doctor, he never thought he would follow in his father’s footsteps.

“I decided in medical school that I really wanted to be surgical sub-specialist, but I wasn't going to go into ophthalmology because that’s what my dad did,” said Dr. Mann.

After trying various fields including orthopedics, plastic surgery and general surgery, Dr. Mann eventually decided that he did in fact want to be an ophthalmologist.

“When I decided I wanted to do ophthalmology, I said to myself, ‘Okay, I’ll do something else other than what my dad does. I’ll go into retina surgery,’ which is surgery on the back part of the eye, ‘Or I’ll do ocular plastics,’ surgery around the eyelids.”

However, throughout college and medical school, Dr. Mann was constantly wearing either glasses or contacts, so he made the decision to have LASIK surgery, causing a career change for the soon-to-be refractive surgeon.

“I was wearing contacts and glasses from my third year in college all the way through medical school, and I just got so tired of those,” said Dr. Mann. I had LASIK right when I was graduating and it changed my life. I was so dependent on glasses. I couldn't see the alarm clock when I woke up in the morning, so to be able to do that to someone, to give them that gift, to me, I think is really valuable. So that is why I decided to become a refractive surgeon.”

Now, after joining his father in practice 11 years ago, Dr. Mann has completed over 20,000 successful procedures, while giving patients his upmost attention and care. Dr. Mann specializes in various treatments including blade-free LASIK, ICLs to correct extreme nearsightedness, an alternative to LASIK eye surgery, as well as laser cataract surgery including monofocal lenses for single vision and multifocal lenses for distance, intermediate and near.

The blade-free LASIK procedure can be performed at The Woodlands location, and is a refractive surgery that enhances vision by treating nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. The surgery consists of lifting the corneal flap, treating the surface of the eye with a laser, and then putting the flap back in place. At Mann Eye Institute, LASIK is performed without the use of blades, giving patients increased predictability and visual outcomes. Since he began working at Mann Eye in 2004, Dr. Mann has seen incredible advances in technology that now allow his patients to undergo this low-risk procedure that not only has almost immediate results, but decreases the downtime of patients so that they can get back to their normal routine as quickly as possible.

“When we first started with blade-free LASIK, it took about a minute and twenty seconds to create the flap, and you're applying pressure, tremendous amounts of pressure, on the eye when you're creating that flap. It is hard for the patients to stay still, and any movement causes the suction to break, and suction would break so frequently. And now, it is just incredibly rare because it takes eight seconds to create the flap. It is that quick, and the lasers have become much faster, but also much more accurate,” explained Dr. Mann.

For patients who undergo blade-free LASIK, their vision is usually clear four to six hours after surgery. Most are even able to drive themselves to their appointment the very next day, which happens to be one of Dr. Mann’s favorite parts of his job.

“The most rewarding part is seeing the patients the first day after surgery. The Saturday morning post-ops actually make going to work on Saturdays fun, because they’re happy and they’re smiling.”

Dr. Mann also performs cataract surgery, a procedure in which a patient’s cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a multi-focal lens. This gives patients the ability to see up close and far away, eliminating the need for glasses. Dr. Mann notes that although Mann Eye Institute has done this procedure for years, the advancements in multi-focal lenses keep improving.

Aside from The Woodlands location, Mann Eye Institute’s main office, located at 5115 Main Street in Houston, Texas, has an Ocular Surface Treatment Center that is dedicated to helping people with chronic dry eyes. With the growing technology affecting eye care, Mann Eye is also about to implement a procedure known as a Corneal Inlay, a new refractive surgery.

“When you get into your 40s, you start losing the ability to see up close, and you hold things further and further away, and at some point between 45 and 52 for most people, they need reading glasses to see up close,” explained Dr. Mann. “This is a procedure to take people out of reading glasses. That is the latest and greatest in refractive surgery and we’re about to get started with that.”

No matter the procedure or treatment, Dr. Mann and the rest of the doctors at Mann Eye Institute and Laser Center are using highly advanced technology and techniques in the field of ophthalmology, only guaranteeing that their patients get the best possible results so that they can see clearly like never before.

“I think we have the most experience, and I think we've got great surgeons,” said Dr. Mann. “The young surgeons that we’ve hired, since I’ve been here, have wonderful experience, and we have a focus on technology. We always get the newest, the latest, and the greatest. That’s our commitment so that we can provide the best procedure for our patients and the best outcomes.”
