SHENANDOAH, Texas -- The Woodlands Highlanders came into Thursday's game undefeated in district and ready to keep it that way with a win over Summer Creek. Despite a few first half struggles and an injury to starting quarterback Eric Schmid, the Highlanders secured another win 49-14 over the Bulldogs.

The Summer Creek Bulldogs, 1-3 in district headed into the game, came out strong and ready to face the Highlanders. The TWHS defense has touted four shutout games so far this season, but they were unable to keep Summer Creek from scoring.

The Highlanders maintained possession of the ball for much of the first quarter and put points on the board first, thanks to a one-yard run from Jordan Talford, making it 7-0. The Highlander defense held Summer Creek on their first possession and then TWHS moved the ball down the field to end the first quarter. TWHS' Carlos Ramos, would find the end zone on a 10-yard run quickly in the second quarter, taking the Highlander's lead to 14.

Later in the quarter, the Highlanders would make a mistake on a punt return and Summer Creek would capitalize with a touchdown a few plays later. However, the point after was blocked, making it 14-6. On the Highlanders' next drive, Summer Creek's Jordan Williams would intercept the ball in the end zone. Summer Creek was unable to capitalize on this Highlander mistake, however, and Eric Schmid would be the next Highlander to score on a 5-yard touchdown run to take the lead to 21-6.

The Bulldogs wouldn't back down, though, and quarterback John Holcombe would score and then close the gap with a two point conversion. Headed into the half, the Highlanders led the Bulldogs 21-14. The Woodlands reconvened and stepped into the third quarter with defense holding Summer Creek 25-0 for the entire second half.

“It was a different half for us defensively,” Head Coach Mark Schmid said. “We went in at the end of halftime and made some adjustments. The kids came out and played with a little more focus. We tackled well and we got line up right, and that was a big difference in the first half.”

Junior quarterback, Eric Schmid, pulled out of the game with a dislocated shoulder at the end of the third quarter, and Craig Heiser stepped into his place and maintained the momentum through the rest of the game.

"Craig Heiser and Woody came in and did an outstanding job in the second half, and they’re very capable quarterbacks,” Schmid said. “It’s nice to see them get their opportunity and do their thing.”

The Highlander defense didn't allow Summer Creek to score in the second half of the game, and the offense continued to make big plays to put points on the board.

The Highlanders will finish their regular season next Thursday, November 5, at Kingwood, where Kingwood will be playing for their seating in the playoffs.

“They’re going to want a higher seat, so they’re going to play us tough," Schmid said. “There’s no doubt about it.”
