CONROE, Texas - The Conroe Independent School District Board of Trustees gave special recognition at their November 17 meeting to Ride and Houser Elementary Schools for being named Exemplary Schools in Health and Physical Education by the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (TAHPERD).

TAHPERD is a not-for-profit professional association of individuals in the allied fields of health education, physical education, recreation, and dance and is committed to the development of knowledge and programs that promote active, healthy lifestyles and enhance skilled, aesthetic motor performance. As part of TAHPERD’s mission, the organization promotes healthy schools through an Exemplary Schools Program. Schools across the state may apply for recognition based on their level of compliance with a minimum of 15 criteria.

Ride Elementary was recognized along with five other schools across the state as a 2014 TAHPERD Exemplary School. Houser Elementary is one of 15 schools being recognized with a 2015 TAHPERD Exemplary School award for quality health and physical education programs. These recognitions are significant and reflect the excellent health and physical education programs provided for our students.

Dr. Sharon Sterchy, Coordinator of Health and Physical Education, provided a brief overview of the criteria required for this recognition to the Board of Trustees and introduced Bridget Hodge, physical education teacher, and Megan Burnham, Principal of Ride Elementary, along with Amber Reynolds and Sheri Rutledge, physical education teachers, and Angela Lozano, Houser Elementary Principal.
