THE WOODLANDS, Texas – After six weeks of intense competition and dozens of individual performances before audiences and celebrity guest judges, the Texas Star: The Woodlands grand champion finalist was chosen. RL Bell won the competition, taking home the grand prize that includes a year’s worth of public relations services from WICKed Publicity, CD cover art, hours of recording time at Mathew Knowles’ Music World Entertainment Recording Studios and $5,000 cash. The event took place at Papa’s Ice House and was presented by Mercedes-Benz of The Woodlands.

“It was such a blessing to win this competition just a couple of hours before my birthday,” said Bell, a local singer/songwriter who also fronts RL & Deep Soul, a popular band that plays rock, R&B, Motown, funk and originals. “Being crowned the first Texas Star: The Woodlands helps me realize my hopes of advancing my singing career and for music to be a major part of my life.”

Donna Wick, CEO of WICKed Publicity, echoed the high stakes and reputation that come with this competition. “Our firm created Texas Star for the everyday singer/songwriter. It’s definitely not glorified karaoke; it’s about talent. RL blew everyone away, and we have big plans for him in the music world.”

Bob Milner, co-owner and general manager of Mercedes-Benz of The Woodlands, was one of the celebrity guest judges and also presented the grand prize to Bell. He was particularly proud to be the competition’s presenting sponsor. “Texas Star is the kind of event that has the potential to launch a new career,” he said. “We’ve got so much talent in The Woodlands area and Texas at large; I’m excited to be a part of this young man’s rising career path.”

A portion of the proceeds from the competition benefit the nonprofit organizations Austin Food Bank, Emergency Chaplains Group, and Rock School Fund. Plans are already in motion for next year’s competition, which will include even greater stakes and grander prizes.
