THE WOODLANDS, Texas — The 9-11 Lady Highlanders basketball team faced the Atascocita Lady Eagles (11-8) in the first round of district play on Tuesday, January 5th at The Woodlands High School gymnasium.

After winning the opening tip off, the Lady Eagles took the ball down the court. Nadia Trevino, an Atascocita senior, scored on the first possession to put the Lady Eagles up 2-0. The Woodlands junior guard, Julia Glandt, came back with a layup to tie the game at 2-2. The rest of the Lady Highlanders' points in the first quarter came from free throws. They were 4 of 8 from the free throw line in the first quarter. Atascocita’s other 4 points came from senior, Raven Cato and sophomore, Ronje Williams as the quarter ended with the score tied at 2-2.

The second quarter was plagued with turnovers for the Lady Highlanders, causing head coach Dana Bruton to call a timeout after the first minute and fifteen seconds. Glandt scored four of The Woodlands’ six second quarter points and sophomore forward Madison Morton added the other two. The scoring leader for Atascocita, senior center Hannah Hopkins, scored ten of her seventeen total points in the second quarter. The game went into halftime with Atascocita up 20-12.

The second half began with Lady Highlander junior guard Sarah Butterfield, taking a charge that game some energy to her team’s bench, but turnovers still prevented them from creating the offense they needed to counter Atascocita’s shooting. Senior forward Payton Walker with a layup and sophomore guard Amanda Maresca with a three pointer, contributed the only points for the Lady Highlander’s in the third quarter. Maresca would end the game with 9 points, second best on the team, all coming from made three point shots.

“We know that she’s a three point shooter. We want her to spot up and take those shots," Bruton said. “She’s young and she’s still not quite where she needs to be maturity wise.”

However, Bruton said she is confident that her young guard will get more comfortable with shooting as the season progresses.

The Lady Highlanders gave their best efforts to make a run for the Lady Eagles in the fourth quarter, despite falling short, 48-32. Julia Glandt led the team with 12 points despite battling foul trouble and fouling out in the middle of the fourth quarter.

“We just need to get Julia to stay on the floor longer," Bruton said. "It’s your leading scorer and she’s not on the floor for over half of the game. She was on the floor for 18 minutes. We need her to stay on the court because she does have that capacity to impact our team in a positive way, handling the ball and making offensive contributions.”

“We have to quit turing the ball over and all of our young guards have to grow up. I was super proud of their effort in the second half, but we’ve got to start minimizing our mistakes because that’s costing us ballgames," Bruton said. "We’re just going through growing pains. We’ve got to get more mature quickly. Being young on the court is leading to more mistakes and mistakes leads to offense for the other team. But I’ll take that second half team any day, any time.”

The Lady Highlanders’s next action will be on Friday, January 8th against the 5-10 College Park Lady Cavaliers at College Park High School.
