SHENANDOAH, Texas — Three softball players from Oak Ridge High School recently signed their letters of intent to compete at the university level, but they still have a job to do before they begin their collegiate careers.

See what they have to say about what lies ahead for them.

Catcher Amanda Cunniff, pitcher Rebecca Foster, and second baseman and shortstop Alicia Hill have dedicated their last year in high school to leading their softball program to a successful season and, hopefully, the state championship. The senior starters have big dreams for the season despite having a young team.

“It’s a young team, but everyone is capable,” Hill said. “I’m sure we’ll all come together. We all get along pretty well, so I’m sure we’ll be able to get along far.”

Although they don’t have many varsity returners, head coach Amanda Brimberry said that her team has the talent it takes to go far into the season. Knowing that her girls are versatile, she said that the athleticism her girls have will help build a new foundation of leadership.

“A lot of those leaders last year for us were with us for four years on varsity,” Brimberry said. “Replacing those leaders and finding our groove may take a little longer, but in the scrimmages we’ve had, we’ve been very successful. The girls are very talented and athletic and are doing great things.”

As the team works together to solidify leadership, Brimberry knows she can count on Cunniff, Hill and Foster to help guide the Lady War Eagles through the transition into the new season. With big expectations for the signees, Brimberry said each of the girls bring something to the table that sets Oak Ridge up for a great season. She knows that the goal of getting far into the playoffs is attainable for her team.

“Our district is one of the hardest, if not the hardest in the state of Texas, so playoffs is our goal this year,” Brimberry said. “I would love to be a competitor in the first two spots of our district, and I would like these girls to go far in the playoffs because I believe they can. Just because they’re young and they’re a new team doesn’t mean that we can’t go further than we’ve gone in the past.”
