TENNIS

April 12 at Houston Christian*

Boys Cooper 2 • Houston Christian* 3 loss

Girls Cooper 5 • Houston Christian* 0 win

April 15 vs Kinkaid*

Girls Cooper 2 • Kinkaid* 3 loss

The girls first two matches were tough ones for the line one doubles team of Hannah Weinstein and Marie Berthiaux and the singles line 1 Sanjena Venkatesh. Weinstein and Berthiaux pulled off a close win in the first set to a very challenging and aggressive Kinkaid team with a set score of 7-5. The second set was an easier win for the doubles team 6-2. Venkatesh showed that she was the more accomplished player playing line 1 singles against a player that tried all the shots she had but could not pull off the win, Venkatesh won in dominating fashion 6-1, 6-2.

The line 2 singles freshman Vandana Venkatesh rallied her way to 3 sets but in the end the senior from Kinkaid had more match experience and won the last set. Line 3 singles Ashley Wu, recovering from a week long illness just couldn't muster the energy to beat out the very skilled Kinkaid player. The doubles team of Jimena Gonzalez-Orcajo and Elaine Pauli worked well as a team but again could not get the win from the skilled Kinkaid doubles team.

Boys Cooper 2 • Kinkaid* 3 loss

The boys’ team had much the same outcome. Turner Gregory and Jason Weinstein at line 1 doubles had a very easy win while the line 2 doubles team of Nathaniel Wu and Noah Wescoat could not beat a very dominate Kinkaid team.

Omar Suki had a fabulous match showing us that the freshman will be an asset to the team for years to come. He took his match into 3 sets and played some of the best singles tennis we have seen all year. Victor Kareh at line 1 singles and Shezzy Iqbal at line 3 singles did their best against very talented players but could not get Cooper the win.

From Coach Scott Holland: “Two good days of competition at Nick Finnegan Spring Invitational at St. John's with all of our SPC South Zone Schools represented.

Two more athletes qualified for the SPC Championships at the end of April. Eleven more Personal Records were set at this meet. We have 2 weeks until SPC and still a lot of training ahead of us. Times are dropping and field events are reaching better heights and distances. We are hoping to be hitting on all cylinders when we get to SPC in Dallas. We qualified a large group this year. Several young athletes earned qualifying marks. Looking forward to the Championship Meet.”
