UPDATE: June 26

At the completion of the finals in the women's 3-meter springboard diving, Kassidy Cook of The Woodlands is going to the Olympics in Rio!

At the end of Round 4, Cook led by 101 points, the equivalent of more than one dive, over the second place competitor, Abby Johnston, who will be returning for her second Olympics. She won Silver in 2012 in the Women's synchronized 3m springboard with partner, Kelci Bryant.

Just a couple of days ago USA Diving announced that FINA, the international governing body for diving, awarded the U.S. a second quota spot for the women's individual 3m springboard competition at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

At the end of the final round of dives, Cook led with 1003.65 points, and Johnston with 949.30. Cook’s difficulty factor and perfection, and Johnston’s previous Olympic experience, makes the two a dynamic duo, and strong contenders to both medal at the 2016 Olympic Games.

THE WOODLANDS, Texas - Kassidy Cook of The Woodlands continues to lead the field in the Senior Women’s 3m Springboard Diving. After the Semi Finals Cook has a substantial lead over the other competitors, including the second place finisher, 2012 Olympic synchronized 3m springboard silver medalist, Abby Johnston..

The divers performed 5 dives in the event. 5 Optional Dives, with a minimum DD for Optional dives of 13.9. Optional dives were from 5 different groups, and the divers could not repeat any dives. (Any dive can be used as Optional.) In the preliminary round Cook continued to build a lead over Johnston and the rest of the field, tallying 338.30 points to Johnston’s 303.60.

In the Semi Finals the scores were carried over from the previous segment, and the complete Dive Sheet was then performed. At the end of the Semi Finals, Cook accumulated 660.85 points to Johnston’s 626.55 total, going into the Finals with a substantial 34.30-point lead.

Twelve divers will advance to the Finals Sunday, June 26, and the diving format will be repeated like that in the Preliminary event, followed by the complete Dive Sheet. The U.S. qualified for only one spot in this event for the 2016 Olympics, so only the top finisher in the women’s 3m springboard will be named an Olympian for the 2016 Games in Rio. It’s a winner takes all competition on Sunday.

FINA, the international governing body of diving, could award the U.S. a second spot for the 2016 Olympics. If the U.S. is awarded a second women’s springboard spot, the top two finishers would be named to Team USA.
