Update August 17, 2014:

The homeowner of the 3-story closet theft where jewelry and fashion accessories, originally reported as valued at one million dollars, has confirmed an extortion attempt by the thief. Theresa Roemer told the media (KTRK) that the thief who broke into her closet, was trying to extort her before going to the media and saying the merchandise was fake.

The thief contacted the media (Houston Press) on Friday by phone, and mailed some of the items to them, claiming the items are worthless fakes, but not before trying to extort $500,000 in 'hush' money.

The public is contributing their theories to the bizarre closet robbery in The Woodlands in the social media...

"So here is my theory.... This was all set up by the owner, she was supposed to give the 'thief' money to commit the 'crime' and something went sideways. So now the thief is telling everybody the stuff is fake so she can't get her insurance money. There's nothing about the entire situation that'll ever make me think this was real," said Stephanie Wood.

"It's all a total set up. Convenient they went to dinner and didn't set the alarm," said Karen Jacomet.

"Looks like an insurance scam all along," said Mack A. Miller.

Woodlands Online will continue to follow this story and post any new developments.

Update August 15, 2014:

Woodlands Online affiliate, KHOU, reported that a person claiming to be the thief who broke into Theresa Roemer's massive 3-story closet, says the items that were stolen are worthless fakes. The suspect mailed jewelry that supposedly was taken from the crime scene, to the Houston Press. Their staff reported that they received a call Tuesday, from someone claiming to be the person who burglarized Theresa Roemer's closet earlier this month.

The person, speaking through a voice modulator and a burner phone with a 917 (New York City) area code, notified the staff they'd be receiving some of the stolen jewelry as proof. The caller told staff members the stolen items were supposedly worthless, and a deal to return the items to Roemer in exchange for cash fell through. According to Houston Press staff writer, Craig Malisow, the caller tried to extort $500,000 from Theresa Roemer, by telling her they would go to the media and say the stuff stolen, was fake.

Roemer's closet was burglarized August 2, just days after her three-story, 3,000 square foot closet was featured on Good Morning America. Surveillance video caught the robbery in process. Roemer has not commented on the latest developments.

UPDATE:

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office says they have little to work with concerning the theft at the Roemer resident in The Woodlands, where jewelry, and designer shoes and handbags were taken.

"It's an atypical home burglary," said Lt. Brady Fitzgerald, with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department.

The theft is valued at $1 milion dollars, which was taken in the span of just 40 minutes by a lone burglar while the Roemers dined out.

"They targeted exactly what they wanted and did it very cleanly," said Fitzgerald. "He's wearing a jumpsuit, gloves, he's covered. It's very difficult to identify him just from the video itself."

The video has yet to be released. Detectives say it's too early to rule out anyone.

"It could have been someone who watched the show and targeted it or someone with internal knowledge of the residence," said Fitzgerald. "We just don't know yet."

Crime Stoppers is offering a $2,000 reward for information that helps lead to an arrest in this case. Woodlands Online will post the video on line as soon as it's released to the media.
