THE WOODLANDS, Texas — The Woodlands Bar Association (WBA) has developed a free law line once a month to help people in Montgomery County with legal troubles.

Since its beginning in 2011, the goal of LawLines is to help people with legal questions. It is completely anonymous—both the callers and the volunteer lawyers.

The idea originated from other law line programs in the surrounding areas, like Harris County.

“Most calls are probate or family law questions.” Patricia Chapman, the creator of the line in Montgomery County, said. “Every once in while, we get criminal law questions.”

The lawyers answering questions are simply volunteers for the evenings. Almost every month, Chapman has to turn these volunteer lawyers away because the program is so popular among the association.

WBA hosts LawLines in connection with Montgomery County United Way (MCUW). MCUW provides the phones and the space for LawLines to take place. However, they do not answer people’s questions who already have a lawyer. The line is not to represent people but to help the public access the information they need and desire.

“We hope the program expands and continues,” Chapman said.

The lawyers in the area have realized the extensive need for legal advice. While LawLines has been successful, WBA and other law organizations see a need for face-to-face communication and free advice.

Currently, The Woodlands Bar Association is working with Lone Star Legal System and Exxon to develop a pro bono legal service once a month.

LawLines is held the first Monday evening of each month as long as there is not a holiday. Call 281-292-4155 for the service.
