From Coach Ray Hedden:
It has been a great week of volleyball for The John Cooper School! We started with a sweep of Frassati on Tuesday with total team contribution and everyone scoring for the Dragons led by Kara O’Neal.
We then left for Allen on Thursday for the Texas Open. This tournament was stacked with 5a and 6a powerhouses. Cooper came into the tournament ranked 28th out of 32 teams. First up for the Dragons was State 5a favorite, Lovejoy. We gave them all we could handle, but dropped the match, losing 22-25 and 21-25.
We then went on to play another 5a school, Midway, where we lost Set 1 but fought back to win Sets 2 and 3 to take the match.
In order to take second place in the pool, and a shot at the championship bracket we needed to beat another 5a team, Independence. After winning the first set, we dropped the second, and went on to win the match, taking the third set in dominating fashion.
Taking second in the pool meant a playoff match against Lone Star with the winner playing in the top 16 on Saturday. We finished Friday evening with a two-set sweep over Lone Star and secured a position in the championship bracket.
Saturday morning began with the Dragons drawing the 6a powerhouse, Amarillo, the team that went to Final 4 at the Adidas Invitational last week. Amarillo came out strong winning the first set. The turning point came when the team took Set 2, shocking Amarillo, and forcing a third set. We then overcame a seven-point deficit, scratching out points on defense and upsetting Amarillo by taking Set 3, 26-24.
That win is one of the biggest in Dragon history when facing a non-SPC opponent.
The next match put us up against Lovejoy again. We took the first set of the tournamnt from Lovejoy, but after playing six straight sets, we quickly ran out of gas and Lovejoy overpowered us in the loss. That left us playing in the silver bracket for fifth place where we dominated Midway again, this time in straight sets.
The finals for fifth place set the Dragons up against former 6a State Champions, The Woodlands High School. Cooper again shocked the Highlanders by taking Set 1, but lost the next two sets.
Overall, it was a great success with the team finishing sixth overall after coming in seeded 28th. I was very proud of how the team fought.
Senior Kaylee Frazier was named All Tournament Setter. I was also proud of junior Kara O’Neal who led the Dragons to very big wins, often dominating our opponents. The overall tournament record was 5-3 moving the Dragons to 10-7 for the season. I am proud that 16 of those matches have been against larger public schools and we have held our own."

Next up for the Dragons: The Dragons travel to compete at Conroe High School on August 26 at 5:30 p.m.

Varsity FOOTBALL

Aug. 19 scrimmage vs. Second Baptist on Pugh Field, 3-17 loss
From Coach Brent Landrum: The scrimmage versus Second Baptist went very well for the Dragons. We came out healthy, we were very physical, and we made great strides offensively and defensively. Second Baptist is a very good team and we held our own. The score of the two-quarter scrimmage was 17-3 in favor of Second Baptist. We had our chances. We turned the ball over inside their 20 late in the second quarter. That hurt.
“I left the scrimmage very encouraged for the season. We have to stay healthy as we do not have much depth. The boys continue to work hard daily to get better and to have a good season.”

Next up for the Dragons: The Dragons travel to compete at Iola High School on Friday, Aug. 26
