THE WOODLANDS, Texas – A local therapist points out that, with the new school year approaching, it’s important to remember that the last days of summer can go quickly and, if people are not careful, they could miss out on some great chances to engage with their family.

Anne Causey, a professional licensed therapist who provides counseling services to residents all throughout the Houston Metro area, encourages families to make the most of the summer that is left before life gets crazy with early mornings, homework and afterschool activities.

“These last days go by so fast that we can get caught up in the planning and shopping, and miss out on some great chances to stay connected with family,” she said. “When families spend time connecting and working on their relationships with one another, everything is better. It helps family members draw closer to one another, cooperate better and feel more important. Being focused on each other also benefits your health and can actually bring down blood pressure.”

Causey provides some tips to get the most out of the last days of summer:

· Put Away the Electronics – “Electronic devices can be addicting and they allow us to tune everyone else out. When our attention is absorbed by electronics, you may notice more shouting and impatience. Put the phone down engage in an activity or even just a conversation where you are fully present in the moment. Dust off the board games or learn a new card game and get the whole family involved.”

· Be Spontaneous – “It’s easy to get stuck in a routine and push actual activities to the someday list. Having fun doesn’t have to be expensive. Check apps such as Groupon for deals and discounts. Check your community to see if they offer movie nights in the park or other events that are free.”

· Get out of the house – “Beat the summer heat by visiting the local community pools, waterparks, or take a day trip to some water destination. Even a simple water balloon fight or dancing in the sprinkler can provide the needed entertainment to boost the family morale.”

Causey encourages families to act now. “Don’t let the last days of summer pass you by. Take advantage of the opportunity to connect with your family before they head off to school and the only daily interaction is that of homework police.”
