THE WOODLANDS, Texas – Proclaimed as International Literacy Day in 1966, Sept. 8 marks the 50th anniversary of the program designed to “actively mobilize the international community and to promote literacy as an instrument to empower individuals, communities and societies.”

Established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, International Literacy Day 2016 – Reading the Past, Writing the Future – will see the launch of the organization’s Global Alliance for Literacy, an initiative intended to promote literacy as a foundation for lifelong learning.

“At The Woodlands LearningRx, we celebrate literacy every day,” said Kim Bellini of the center. “All of us here understand the importance of being able to communicate with and understand the written word, and it is our goal to help our clients of all ages harness their brains’ word power through our brain-training programs.”

In an effort to help both parents and children overcome reading difficulties, The Woodlands LearningRx has produced a checklist of ways to get past new or multisyllable words, which includes: skip it and go on, and then read it again; go back and read it again; look at the pictures; look for “chunks” of the word that are familiar; and cover up word parts and sound out the word as each section is uncovered. The center also suggests that the children ask themselves three questions: Does it make sense? Does it sound right? Does it look right?

Encouraging children to become lifelong learners is one of the chief goals of The Woodlands LearningRx. The brain-training center, located at 10857 Kuykendahl Road, Suite 240 in The Woodlands, 77382, offers unique, one-on-one training to help students of all ages strengthen their cognitive skills and transform their abilities to learn at a core level.
