THE WOODLANDS, Texas – Karaoke & Cocktails for a Cause is a first-of-its-kind pediatric cancer fundraising event in The Woodlands, honoring Taylor Uresti, with 100% of the net proceeds benefiting the Pinky Swear Foundation.

This foundation aims to ease the financial and emotional impact experienced by children with cancer and their families by providing basic needs and financial support during a very challenging time.

Eric and Taylor's story

Eric Uresti, a long time resident of The Woodlands and father of Taylor Uresti, said it's difficult to imagine what life is like to have a child going through cancer.

"This is why Pinky Swear programs are so important," Eric said. "They do not limit requests from families in need, nor discriminate on socioeconomic status, as childhood cancer impacts all walks of life. When cancer enters life, the simple, everyday things aren’t so simple anymore”.

Taylor was diagnosed with Pre-B Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in August 2010 when she was 4-years old.

An estimated 3,100 children in the United States are diagnosed each year with ALL, a fast-growing blood cancer of lymphocyte-forming cells called lymphoblast’s that dramatically suppress the immune system’s ability to heal itself.

Upon Taylor’s diagnosis, the leukemia had spread to roughly 90 percent of her body. Over the course of the next two years (typical treatment protocol is approximately 8 to 12 months), she overcame every challenge: hair loss, chemotherapy complications and emergency room visits.

In December 2012, Taylor’s cancer was in remission. In July 2016, she completed her final hospital clinic visit.

Taylor remains in remission today. She is a healthy and thriving 5th grader, active in sports, and enjoys the things typical 10-year olds love to do.

“Throughout the difficulties, trials, and setbacks experienced in having a child fighting a cancer diagnosis, one admirable theme that Taylor carried in her attitude on a daily basis was 'you never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have’," Eric said. “We want to be creative in how we go about bringing awareness to pediatric cancer and the financial toll it takes on almost every family impacted."
