CONROE, Texas -- There's nothing quite like a freshly barbecued burger with all the trimmings, served with a side of sound advice.

That's exactly what happened Oct. 10 during First Financial Bank's first company-wide Day of Service.

Conroe Region Chairman and CEO Sam Baker said the effort involved more than 600 employees across Texas. Locally, in Montgomery County and surrounding areas, more than 60 employees participated in Day of Service:

  • Conroe/Westview/Cut & Shoot – Heritage Oaks Assisted Living Center, Carriage Inn Retirement Home
  • Montgomery/Willis – Grace Lutheran Church seniors group
  • Creekside/FM 1488 – Home Towne at Tomball Senior Housing
  • Huntsville/New Waverly – Walker County Senior Citizens Center

Volunteers served a meal and/or dessert and participated in activities with the residents.

"I think most of us got more out of the experience than the senior citizens," Baker said. "It was a real joy."

In Conroe, Chief Fraud Representative Tim Hinz presented a program titled "Understanding the Financial Exploitation of the Elderly."

Baker said there are several scams involving senior citizens, but the two most common involve schemes where the perpetrator requests financial information in exchange for a cash windfall, or criminals posing as distant family relatives.

Financial Bank looks forward to future Day of Service events.

"We will do it again," Baker said. "I don't know who the target audience will be next time, because we see a need for financial education across the board. Regardless, it's nice to work for a company that believes in giving something back."
