THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- A Lone Star College-Montgomery faculty member has been invited to the White House for her outstanding impact on students and helping reduce the equity gap in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.

Dr. Tarcia Hubert, associate professor of Mathematics at LSC-Montgomery, will be part of a conference focused on inclusive STEM education for youth of color, given her leadership in this field.

The conference will take place Friday, Oct. 28 and was initiated by President Barack Obama’s desire to close the opportunity gaps in STEM education for young women and men of color.

Dr. Hubert founded Making Awesome Things Happen (MATH), a community-based nonprofit volunteer organization dedicated to developing mathematical proficiency in economically disadvantaged students. The organization helps traditionally underrepresented students become proficient and confident in mathematics, be successful in academics and life, and increase the number of minorities in STEM-related fields.

“This is an exciting opportunity to collaborate with White House officials, policy makers, STEM education experts and other community advocates about key issues regarding STEM education,” Dr. Hubert said. “I hope to learn about available resources to fund my program, as well as new strategies to implement into MATH.”

Dr. Hubert is known at LSC-Montgomery for specializing in developing unique teaching strategies to create an inclusive culture for all her students.

“Dr. Hubert is always adapting to our learning styles as students,” said McKenna Hyde, a math student at LSC-Montgomery. “She is striving very hard to make it an inclusive environment for everyone’s learning styles.”

Dr. Hubert plans to open a MATH camp at LSC-Montgomery this summer with the intention of involving local students and faculty members.
