THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- Legendary NFL coach Vince Lombardi once famously said, “football is a game of inches.” After a marathon season that will forever be etched in the memory of The Woodlands High School, the Highlanders will try to travel that final inch and capture the first state championship in school history.

Just 48 minutes separate the Highlanders from a season that would rank among the best in the rich history of Texas football.

114 days after winning their first game, The Woodlands (15-0) travels to AT&T Stadium to face Lake Travis (14-1) on Saturday at 8 p.m. Just 48 minutes separate the Highlanders from a season that would rank among the best in the rich history of Texas football.

Lake Travis is a fierce competitor that is likely to give The Woodlands their toughest test. The Cavaliers lost their season opener and have been dominant ever since. They average more than 52 points per game, and their defense is just as tough. They’ve held nine opponents to less than 10 points and have three shutouts.

This game will be a showdown between two of the top quarterbacks in the Lone Star State. Cavalier quarterback Charlie Brewer, who has committed to Southern Methodist University, has thrown for 50 touchdowns and more than 3,500 yards.

Eric Schmid has been taking the snaps and guiding the Highlander offense all year. He’s thrown for 40 touchdowns and nearly 2,800 yards. He’s also the team’s leading rusher with 815 yards. Schmid and tailback Carlos Ramos will be leading the charge on the ground behind an offensive line that has staggered the opposition all year. Ramos has gained 774 yards and has been a key cog in the playoffs since a postseason injury to teammate Jordan Talford moved Ramos into the No. 1 slot.

The Woodlands defense will key on running back Maleek Barkley, who has run for more than 1,300 yards and scored 17 touchdowns.

Both the Highlanders and the Cavaliers have a diverse receiving corps that gives their quarterbacks plenty of options. Kesean Carter, Chris Stewart and Dylan Casey all have more than 40 catches for The Woodlands, and all have game-breaking speed and are threats to go the distance at any time.

The Cavaliers also have three dynamic receivers, Cade Green, Garrett Wilson and Cade Brewer (no relation to the quarterback). Each has at least 47 receptions, with Green leading in yards (972) and Brewer in catches (57) and touchdowns (13).
