THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- The John Cooper School Dragons girls' soccer team defeated Episcopal High School 2-0 in their first Southwest Preparatory Conference game of the season.

"The team has been working hard all week to prepare for EHS and SPC play and all that hard work paid off," said Coach Amber Clevenger. "I'm so proud of the way the team played. Melissa Martin stepped up in a huge way for us defensively, Gina Valderrama and Kate Burns sealed the deal with a goal each. This win was a team effort and very much deserved. It's my hope that we can take this momentum into next week's conference game against St. John's."

Meanwhile, alums from The John Cooper School returned for the annual alumni vs. varsity soccer matchup on Jan. 1 on Pugh Field.

For the first time in many years, the alumni team beat the Dragons in a close 4-3 game.

"The alums came out playing great, going up 2-0 by halftime, but the current group of guys stormed back and took a 3-2 lead, only to relinquish it back to the old guys with two late goals, and the victory," said Coach Bryan Sherman. "Both teams had a lot of fun and it was great to welcome back the past players. Iker Pimienta, class of 2014, had three goals for the alums, more than he ever had as a player at Cooper. Why he waited so long to have that kind of performance, I will never know."
