THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- The National Medal for Museum and Library Service is the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries by the Institute of Museum and Library Services in recognition of exceptional service to the community and for making a difference in the lives of individuals, families, and communities.

The George and Cynthia Woods Mitchell Library was named a finalist for the 2017 National Medal award.

This year’s finalists include individual public libraries, university libraries, art, science, and children’s museums, and many other types of institutions that exemplify the great diversity of libraries and museums across the country. The George and Cynthia Woods Mitchell Library was one of only 15 libraries that were selected to be recognized as finalists for the award this year.

“As beacons of educational opportunities, resources, and civic and cultural inspiration, museums and libraries provide increasingly essential services to our nation,” said Dr. Kathryn K. Matthew, director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services. “We applaud the George and Cynthia Woods Mitchell Library for its commitment to providing outstanding programs and services that enrich the lives of people in their community.”

Donna Dzierlenga, Branch Manager of the George and Cynthia Woods Mitchell Library states, "We are honored to be considered for this award and we appreciate Congressman Brady’s nomination and recognition of the quality service that we provide to our community. The continued support of the County Commissioners, Library Administration, and the South Montgomery County Friends of the Library has empowered our staff to excel in addressing local needs."

Library Director Jerilynn A. Williams noted that "Mitchell Library epitomizes the Library System's Vision of enriching lives by providing access to information, ideas, and interactions." The branch was recently designated a Family Place Library™ and staff members are developing a model that can be used throughout the Library System. "We appreciate their efforts on behalf of the community and congratulate the staff on this recognition by the IMLS."

The National Medal winners will be named later this spring, and representatives from winning institutions will travel to Washington, D.C., to be honored at the National Medal award ceremony. For more information, contact Library Administration at 936-788-8377.
