THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- Twelve seniors from The John Cooper School were named finalists in the 12th Annual Mike Ogg All-Montgomery County Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards, held in May at the Lone Star Expo Center in Conroe.

Five Rotary Clubs in Montgomery County sponsor this annual banquet that provides scholarships and awards to scholar athletes who are exemplary in and out of the classroom.

Cooper finalists and their sport included Marie Berthiaux, girls’ basketball; Rachel Feigin, girls’ track & field; Nicole Juszczak, softball; Grace Ritch, girls’ swimming; Isabel Sands, girls’ soccer; Gina Valderrama, volleyball; Sanjena Venkatesh, girls’ tennis; Wesley DeMarco, boys’ soccer; Robert Finnie, baseball; A.J. Krehbiel, football; Ignacio Ranieri, boys’ swimming and Jason Weinstein, boys’ tennis.

Weinstein was selected as a Scholar Athlete Scholarship Winner for tennis. Weinstein was the Senior Class President this year, a high honor roll student and National Hispanic Scholar finalist and has remained an active member of Cooper’s Interact Club and Student Diversity Committee. On the tennis court, he competed in USTA tournaments during his high school career and has been ranked in the top 125 players in Texas and New England. Playing for the school in the Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC), he has been named All-South Zone and All-SPC for all four years of high school.

“We are very proud of Jason for his many achievements and wish him many congratulations,” said Varsity Tennis Coach Jill Del Rio.

Weinstein will attend Yale University in the fall.

Weinstein and fellow tennis player Sanjena Venkatesh were named male and female honorees for The John Cooper School. Venkatesh, also a four-year member of the varsity tennis team, was named this year as All SPC, All South-Zone and Second Place Line A Singles in the Episcopal High School Tournament. In addition to playing a key role on the Cooper team, she plays at the Super Champ level (top 150 tennis players in Texas) in USTA tournaments. Vankatesh has been actively involved the school’s Interact Club, is a skilled flautist, a high honor roll student and was named a National Merit Commended Scholar.

“Sanjena is a very disciplined individual who always gives 100 percent,” Coach Del Rio said.

Venkatesh will be attending Dartmouth College in the fall.
