THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- Coming off a close loss to A&M Consolidated last weekend, College Park was more than ready to get their first taste of district play against Lufkin on Friday night.

The task wouldn’t be easy for the Cavaliers. University of Houston commit Malik Jackson returned the opening kickoff to the 1-yard line to set up quarterback Kewone Thomas’ touchdown run. Jackson wasn’t done with his production, also catching a 9-yard touchdown pass from Thomas in the first half.

Facing a 14-point deficit early in the first half, College Park turned to their passing game with junior quarterback Jake Hunnicutt. The Cavaliers decided to go with a vertical passing attack, straying away from their ground game with Dane Vann out for the second straight week and Travis Washburn coming off an injury. Hunnicutt was able to find receiver Peyton Sobosle for multiple first downs to keep the Cavaliers in the game. The first half came to an end with College Park’s reliable kicker Carson Mohr kicking a 43-yard field goal to bring the score to 14-3.

The second half didn’t see any scoring until Lukfin quarterback Kewone Thomas hit Breylon Garcia in stride for a 63-yard touchdown. Ultimately, the penalties and injuries for the Cavaliers were too much to handle. College Park eventually had to turn to starting safety Aaron Randle to carry the load for the Cavaliers as Travis Washburn suffered a devastating hit to the helmet by safety Savon Fields, who was ejected for targeting. While the positives came in glimpses, the Cavaliers were able to hold Lufkin to a season low 21 points.

College Park will drop to 1-3 on the season, 0-1 in district play, and will face a frightening West Brook team on Thursday, Oct. 5.
