THE WOODLANDS, TX-- How often does one school have both their football and volleyball teams ranked in the top five in the state? Well for the Woodlands High School, it’s not as rare as you’d think.

The Highlanders football team is on a four-game winning streak after losing their season opener 24-21 to the number one ranked running back of the 2019 class Deondrick Glass and his Katy Tigers on a last-second field goal. Since then, the Highlanders led by Coach Schmid have rolled off four straight victories where they have scored at least 35 points. The Woodlands have ended two undefeated seasons in a row with victories over West Brook and Oak Ridge.

With starting quarterback Quinn Binney injured it has been fellow senior Quinton Johnson leading the way for the red-hot Highlanders. Johnson has had receivers Kesean Carter, Connor Klapesky, Zayne Watson, and Malik Johnson to throw to, making the transition to starter a little smoother. The Highlander backfield has also been productive with running backs Lucas Summers and Bryeton Gilford sharing the load for the Woodlands.

The Woodlands remaining schedule will set them up against three teams that are currently looking on the outside of playoffs. Highlanders seem to be in position for a number one seed going into the 2017 State Playoffs.

With all the success Highlander football has seen in recent years, it has been the volleyball squad that has been even more dominant. Going into the playoffs with a number two state ranking, the Woodlands will have plenty of Division 1 college talent on their roster.

After losing only two matches all season, the second to being district 12-6A rival and number three ranked Oak Ridge, The Highlanders have swept both College Park and Lufkin to put themselves right back into winning form for the playoffs. The Highlanders go into the playoffs with another number one seed and are awaiting on seeding from District 11-6A for their first playoff matchup.
