THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- Children’s author Margaret McManis will visit The Woodlands Children’s Museum Friday, Dec. 22, to read and sign copies of her newest book.

McManis, who lives in Conroe, will arrive at the museum at 11 a.m., just in time to be a guest reader during Storybook Theatre. She’ll be reading “Tally Ho Ho,” a book about a girl’s love of drawing horses, her opportunity to enter an art contest and a special Christmas surprise. McManis dedicated the book to those who worked to save animals when Hurricane Harvey struck Texas.

“We’re thrilled to have a talented children’s author like Margaret McManis visit the museum,” said Angela Colton, executive director of the museum. “I love the way she bases so many of her books on real people and then creates thoughtful and entertaining tales that draw in young readers.”

The museum hosts Storybook Theatre at 11 a.m. every Friday to promote early literacy and help families instill a love of books in children. The presentations combine book readings with songs, rhymes and finger plays designed to enhance language development.

After Storybook Theatre on Dec. 22, the museum will host a meet and greet in which McManis will sell and sign copies of “Tally Ho Ho” ($12) until 12:30 p.m.

McManis, who worked for 30 years as an elementary school librarian, decided to combine her love of history and biographies to write about famous Texas heroines. She started with philanthropist Ima Hogg for her first title, “Ima & the Great Texas Ostrich Race,” which she wrote in 2003 while completing her Master of Fine Arts degree in writing for children from Vermont College.

Since “Ima & the Great Texas Ostrich Race” was published, it went on to become a children’s musical. The book also was selected for inclusion in “Texas Treasures,” a McGraw-Hill supplementary reader used in elementary schools throughout Texas.

Additional titles by McManis include “The Wild Texas Stampede” and “Ole! Cinco de Mayo!”

During her museum visit, McManis will bring copies of “Ima & the Great Ostrich Race” ($15, hardcover) and “The Wild Texas Stampede” ($16, hardcover), in addition to “Tally Ho Ho.”

Storybook Theatre and the meet and greet are included in the museum’s $6 admission for visitors age 1 and older.

The Woodlands Children’s Museum is recommended for ages 7 and under. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
