MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas -- On the second Sunday in May, moms across the country are deservedly showered with attention on Mother’s Day. Unfortunately, while most moms are being treated to breakfast in bed or flower deliveries, tens of thousands of women spend their Mother’s Day living in shelters due to homelessness or domestic violence.

Heartbreaking statistics from the Domestic Violence Resource Center state that one in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime, and an estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year. According to a national study from the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, approximately 25 percent of homeless women are homeless because of violence in the home.

As a way to show love and appreciation to mothers this Mother’s Day, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® of Montgomery County recently hosted its Movers for Moms® collection drive to provide critical gifts to local women staying in community shelters this spring.

This year, the Montgomery County moving company worked with local businesses and non-profit organizations including The Woodlands YMCA Shadowbend and Branch Crossing, The Woodlands Lions Club, Amazing Spaces Storage Centers and The Woodlands Community Presbyterian Church to collect essential and comfort items. More than 4,000 donations were collected and delivered to the Montgomery County Women’s Center.

The Montgomery County Women’s Center’s mission is to lead the effort in preventing Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault through crisis intervention, assistance, advocacy, empowerment and social change.

This spring marked the 11th anniversary of Movers for Moms®. Since its introduction, the program has expanded nationally to all 43 states and more than 350 franchises. Last year was the program’s most successful year to-date, with more than 295,000 items collected for donation to hundreds of shelters across the country. This year, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®’s goal was to collect 310,000 items for moms in need across the country.
