John Cooper Dragon volleyball claims tournament championship; football has first scrimmage

THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- Cooper brought home the championship this weekend at the CHSM (Christian Homeschool Sports Ministries) Invitational in a field of 20 varsity teams. Cooper went 6-0 for the weekend, defeating CHSM, the defending National Champions in the home school division.

Saturday’s games:


We played Village 25-9, 25-6

We played HHA - we won 25-10, 25-15

Those wins gave us 1st in our gold pool.

We the played CHSM, the Defending National Champions in the Home School division.

We had two late comebacks to win 25-22 and 25-23 to bring home the championship.

"Our total team contribution led to these wins; it truly was a unified win<" said Coach Ray Hedden. "Every member of varsity contributed during this tournament! It was a great weekend where heart and determination was crowned the victor! I am very proud of the girls."

Scrimmage Stats 8/17 vs Fort Bend Christian Academy

In 18 plays of controlled scrimmage time and one quarter of football:


Cooper defense did not allow a touchdown

Cooper defense only allowed three first downs

Cooper defense had one interception and one fumble recovery

Cooper offense scored seven touchdowns

Cooper threw five TD passes

Cooper had two rushing touchdowns

"In eight years of football at Cooper this was the best first scrimmage we’ve had," said Coach Brent Landrum. "It was also the most dominant we’ve been in a scrimmage. The boys made very few assignment mistakes on both defense and offense. I thought the defensive and offensive lines played very well. The defensive line controlled the line of scrimmage while the offensive line opened holes for the running backs and provided ample time for the QB in passing situations. It gets tougher from here. We scrimmage Second Baptist this Friday. They are always well coached and they always have great skill and size. It will be a challenge.”
