Woodlands Apartment Hunting 101
By Rachel Goodlad, WOL Columnist
Looking for an apartment in The Woodlands? Be prepared to get the best living quarters for your dollar with the following tips...
- Before you start, answer these questions:
- How much do I want to pay?
- How much space do I need? How many rooms?
- Is there any location I prefer in the Woodlands area? Does proximity to my business / job / child's school / mall / freeway access matter?
- Armed with this information, take a look at our apartment features / benefits guide and get an idea of what you can afford, what extras you like, and the locations you prefer.
- Most apartments have specials during the month or offer coupons. Call the ones you are most interested in and ask for their specials. The printed price is hardly ever the final price. Ask specifically about move-in, quick signing, month off and coupon specials. For a list of Apartments in the Woodlands area, click here.
- Now, you're ready to make mental notes of the things that catch your eye (good or bad) and write it down later. Make sure to ask about or look for these things:
- Water pressure in the bathroom
- Cleanliness -- If the model rooms and general area don't look clean, imagine what living there for awhile will look like.
- Number of Outlets
- Maintenance Man
- Parking
- Security
- Location
- Length of Lease
- Amenities
- Pets
- Make sure you understand everything that is included and what you're responsible for. There will be no surprises or pop-up fees if you ask everything up front. It's not a bad idea to take notes.
- Once you get home, weigh the pros and cons. Know what you can't live without and what you're willing to sacrifice. Where can you imagine being the happiest living?
- Once you've selected an apartment complex, don't be afraid to negotiate. It can't hurt, and it can save you a bundle in the long run. Not going to use your patio? Want some exercise? A poor view could get you a lower price as well as a higher level floor. Want to live there for awhile? Longer leases are sometimes cheaper. Don't settle for the initial price. Ask for specials and definitely try to negotiate.
- Make sure you feel safe and take the time to make sure you will be happy with your decision.
