Welcome to the Adventure Game Blog. I am your host, Samantha. The oldest records of board gaming in Europe date back to Homer’s Iliad (written in the 8th century BC), in which he mentions the Ancient Greek game of Petteia. This game of Petteia would later evolve into the Roman Ludus Latrunculorum. The name translates as “game of twelve markings”, likely referring to the three rows of 12 markings found on surviving boards. The game tabula is thought to be a descendant of this game, and both are similar to modern backgammon.

We have some amazing board games this week. You are going to have some amazing games to play with and teach others.

Our first game is a new one to me, but I have had an amazing time learning about the game. Wingspan was a surprise hit when it was first released in 2019. Wingspan’s designer showed players that a theme for a board game does into have to fit the mold or be something that everyone has seen before. With that mindset, the designer chose a bird sanctuary as the theme for Wingspan. In Wingspan, players spend food resources to add birds, which are represented by individually illustrated cards, to forest, prairie, and wetland habitats on their player boards. Each habitat is associated with a different player action: gaining food resources to pay for birds, laying eggs on birds, or drawing cards. Over the course of four rounds, players take turns activating the habitats on their player boards or adding new birds. As birds are added to a habitat, the basic action of gaining food, laying eggs, or drawing cards associated with that habitat is improved. Additionally, some birds have special abilities that are activated when a player uses their habitat.

At the end of the game, players score points for the birds on their board, objectives achieved during each round and throughout the game, eggs accumulated, and food stored on cards, and cards stored on under cards. The player with the most points wins.

The second game is Codenames. It is a perfect for game night! Codenames exploded onto the party game scene, receiving many awards and selling tons of copies. Codenames centers around a grid of words and the players are divided into two teams. On each theme, one player gives single-word clues to their teammates in an attempt to have them guess words on the grid. The gameplay of Codenames is simple but it sparks conversations, fun disagreements, and sometimes it can be hilariously frustrating for the clue giver. Codenames continues to be popular for families and hobbyists who enjoy its code-breaking feel.

Our last game this week is Pandemic. Pandemic spawned an entire genre. Pandemic is a cooperative game where all players work together to bear the game itself instead of competing with each other. While Pandemic is not the first to do this, it is responsible for bringing the idea to the masses and is often touted as the game that started the cooperative game craze that the industry remains today. These days, a broad game will often be entirely cooperative or even have a cooperative option but before Pandemic, the options were very limited. Pandemic is also the most reviewed board game on the hobbyist website board game geek.

If you are a lady or a conforming gender we have a LADIES GAME NIGHT! On the third Wednesday of every month, Austin and a great group of ladies get together and play and learn some amazing games.
