Pair of Meteor Showers Peak This Week
THE WOODLANDS, TX - A pair or meteor showers will happen this week, with the first peaking tonight.
The first meteor shower will be the Draconid meteor shower, peaking tonight, October 8 through the early morning, pre-dawn hours of October 9. This shower is considered to be a minor meteor shower, with around 10 meteorites per hour. However, a large cluster may also be possible. Make sure to look away from the moon, as moon light may interfere with the ability to view the meteorites.
The second meteor shower, the Southern Taurid meteor shower, will happen the night of October 9 through the pre-dawn hours of October 10. Like the Draconid meteor shower, the Southern Taurid meteor shower is considered minor, with around 10 meteorites per hour.
As long as you're looking away from the moon and are away from city lights, you should be able to see quite a few meteorites during the two events. There is no specific place in the sky to look; just look up.
Another meteor shower, the Orionid meteor shower, will peak later this month, on October 21 into October 22. This meteor shower is slightly larger, with an average of 20 meteors per hour.
