New Year Resolutions for Your Eye Health

For this year, include healthy eyes as part of your New Year’s Resolutions. Many of us use this time of year to change habits and focus on our health. One of the most popular resolutions is always getting more healthy – so include your eye health too! Here are some suggestions for healthy vision in 2020!

Eat your veggies! Add a healthy portion of veggies to your plate for every meal. A diet that includes beta carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in your eye health. Eat a diet rich in leafy greens, fruit and fish.

Get moving! You should try to include 30 minutes of activity into your everyday routine. Maintain a healthy weight, visit your doctors annually (including your optometrist) to improve and maintain overall health.

Avoid smoking. It is a wise choice to not smoke or vape. It is suggested that smoking can reduce blood and oxygen flow to the eye increasing deterioration to the macula. Plus, it is a stinky habit that also impairs the general health of the people around you.

Wear sunglasses, even in the winter. Sporting shades is not only a fashion statement, but it protects your eyes from harmful UV rays. Long and high levels of UV rays can lead to serious health problems. Much like we wear clothes and wear sunscreen to protect our skin from the sun, wearing sunglasses protects our eyes.

Schedule with Woodlands Eye Associates. An annual eye exam is recommended for everyone, young or just young at heart. Having a routine comprehensive eye exam is the most important thing you can do for your eye health.
