THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- The Texas Department of State Health Services has reported the first positive pool of West Nile Mosquitoes in The Woodlands for 2008.

The sample was collected during the week of July 14 by the Community Associations' Environmental Services department. This season, the department has already monitored 250 sites throughout the community. Although the location the positive test was not released, the positive test result shows a need for area residents to take proper action.

Lynn Aldrich, Environmental Services Manager for the Community Associations, said, "Everyone should assume that there could be and at times are West Nile Virus positive mosquitoes in their neighborhood and use appropriate precautions; avoid being out at times mosquitoes are active, wear repellent and cover up if you must be out, and deal with standing water on you property. Just because West Nile positive mosquitoes were not caught in a neighborhood does not mean they are not there at some times."

If you must be outside during the dusk to dawn hours, when the disease-carrying mosquitoes are active, remember to wear long, loose, light clothing and apply repellent.  For more information on West Nile Virus and additional safety measures see the links below
