No. 17 College Park tops Huntsville 28-7
SHENANDOAH, Texas - J.C. Ramirez rushed for 150 yards and Austin Boudreaux scored twice as No. 17 state-ranked College Park took care of visiting Huntsville 28-7 Thursday night at Woodforest Stadium.
Ramirez, Boudreaux and quarterback Zach Wright combined for 342 of the Cavaliers’ 378 rushing yards. Boudreaux broke the ice after a scoreless first quarter with a 7-yard touchdown run and Ramirez ripped off a 65-yard touchdown jaunt just before halftime and the Cavaliers (1-1) held a 14-0 lead at the break.
Boudreaux dashed 36 yards for an early third-quarter score before Wright went five yards in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter to tally College Park’s final score.
“Our tailbacks did a great job,” Cavaliers head football coach Richard Carson said. “Paco (Solano) didn’t play this week. We kind of went ‘old school’ and just kind of got after them up in the middle and they responded well to it.”
Wright, making his first varsity start after Tyler Chaumet went down with a season-ending knee injury early in last week's game, guided the offense the 428 total yards, including 50 yards passing.
“I’m proud of Zach,” Carson said. “Zach has stepped in and done a good job. We’re going to work on throwing it a little better and take advantage of that when we have an opportunity.
“We’re going to win football games with Zach.”
Huntsville (0-2) averted the shutout with a touchdown in the final minute of play. But that in no way negated an outstanding defensive effort, led by senior linebacker Jeff Biehn.
“The defense is playing well and getting after it right now,” Carson said. “Last week they had some balls on the ground that we didn’t get and this week we got them. We work very hard on creating turnovers and that helped us out.
“The defense is moving around, we play a lot of kids. We’re not big enough to just stand there. So we’ve got to kind of do a little smoke and mirrors on them. The kids have done well.”
Carson said it felt good to get one in the win column.
“Last week we probably played well enough to win but we just didn’t finish the deal,” he said. “And that was our focus all week, ‘let’s finish.’”
The Cavaliers were able to finish despite a handful of injuries that kept some players on the sidelines this week.
“We had some kids out but that’s what the other ones practice for every week,” Carson said. “They’ve got to step up and be ready to play. Next week we’ll get some more guys back. We probably could have played a few kids. But we sat them out because it wasn’t a district game.
“But I was proud of our youngsters. They played hard. They finished the deal this week. There were some kids that got an opportunity to show what they could do and so it was good for us.”
