SHENANDOAH, Texas - The Woodlands High School Football team outlasted the Hightower Hurricanes 46-39 Friday night at Woodforest Stadium.
46-39 in double-overtime

Joseph Schneider’s fourth touchdown pass was finally enough to keep the Highlanders unbeaten in two games this season. His 9-yard scoring strike to Max Ward in the second overtime was the margin of victory in a wild shootout that saw the two teams combine for 910 total yards.

“You can’t say you didn’t get your monies worth tonight,” Highlanders head coach Mark Schmid said.

Schneider did his part, accounting for 398 total yards. He threw for 214 of those and rushed for another 184 yards and two more scores.

“Joe had an outstanding night,” Schmid said. “It seemed like every time we had to have a play, Joe Schneider was making it on the offensive side.”

He left it all on the field in a draining game that had a playoff atmosphere.

“Everyone is just drained,” Schmid said. “The thing I told them I’m most proud of, I know we had some great plays tonight, but just their tenacity, their will to never give up. No matter what happened they kept coming back, swinging. And we got the last swing in.”

Schneider threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Max Ward and Jeremy Dueitt threw to Michael Cooper for the two-point conversion to spark the fireworks early on. When Ben Pruitt drilled a 26-yard field goal with 2:12 remaining in the first quarter, the Highlanders grabbed an 11-0 lead and appeared headed for a runaway victory.

But Hightower came to play as well. They scored the next 10 points in game, and it was on.

Schneider then threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Matt Lee before scampering for touchdown runs of 34 and 57 yards. And that was just for openers. Schneider threw 29 yards to Jackson LaPlant for the first score in overtime.

“They want to fight to win and they have something to prove,” Schmid said. “We beat a good football team. Hightower coming in had 26 or 28 consecutive regular-season wins. That says a lot about what our kids did tonight.”
