Strykers: Win streak snapped
BRYAN, Texas – The Woodlands Strykers had their bats silenced and a five-game winning streak snapped on Thursday by the Brazos Valley Bombers.
Three Brazos Valley pitchers combined on a one-hitter in the Bombers’ 3-2 win.
Brian Brightwell broke up the no-hitter with a lead-off single in the seventh. That was after Brazos Valley starter Kyle Martin was relieved following six innings of no-hit ball with six strikeouts and three walks.
But the Strykers nearly pulled off yet another late-inning win, rallying for a run in the ninth before leaving Dan Perkins on third and Adrian Lopez on first.
The Strykers scratched across a run in the sixth inning to trim Brazos Valley’s lead to 2-1 after the Bombers scored a run in each of the first two innings. Gabe Fyock reached on an error and then scored on another of Brazos Valley’s six errors on the night.
Ricky Sanchez reached on a fielder’s choice grounder in the ninth, went to third on an error, and scored on a wild pitch. However, unlike the five previous games, the Strykers couldn’t come up with the clutch hit to tie or take the lead.
It wasted a gutsy performance from Derek Wade (1-5), who was making only his third start of the season in 14 appearances. In his longest stint of the season, Wade went seven innings while scattering 10 hits and yielding three runs. He struck out two and did not walk a batter.
John Almogabar pitched an inning in relief, striking out two while giving up one hit.
The Strykers make their final homestand of the 2012 Texas Collegiate League baseball season starting Friday. It will also be their longest stand of the season.
The Strykers host the Acadiana Cane Cutters on Friday before welcoming in the East Texas Pump Jacks on Saturday and Brazos Valley on Sunday. The homestand concludes with the Alexandria Aces on Tuesday and Wednesday.
All games begin at 7:05 p.m.
