Basketball: The Woodlands Christian falls by a point in state title game

MANSFIELD, Texas – The Woodlands Christian Academy boys’ basketball team was defeated 53-52 by Lubbock Christian in the TAPPS 3A state championship on Saturday at Summit High School.

The Warriors (32-5) were looking for a third consecutive state championship and fifth in the last six seasons. They won back-to-back titles in 2008-09 after advancing to the 2007 state semifinals. But The Eagles (30-6) defeating a fourth consecutive district champion to claim the TAPPS 3A title.

The Warriors advanced to the state championship game with a 72-53 victory over district foe St. Thomas Episcopal. It was the Warriors’ third victory over that opponent this season. Bob Sievert, James Bento and Jeremy Swisher helped lead the way.

The Eagles won their second consecutive one-point game, making it to the state championship with a 62-61 victory over Amarillo San Jacinto Christian in the other state semifinals game on Friday. They edged Bullard Brook Hill 62-60 in the state quarterfinals.
