THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- Education for Tomorrow Alliance (EfTA) is embarking on their next project, their Student Internship Program (SIP), which takes place in spring and through early summer. Local businesses host internship opportunities for students during the summer preceding their senior year of high school, to provide hands-on work experience in a field that the students are considering for a career path.

EfTA asks that the internship opportunity consist of two weeks/80 hours, for a realistic depiction of the work environment. In turn, the students are asked to work two consecutive weeks to obtain an understanding of the job tasksand instill a level of commitment. The number of interns is not limited to one per business, but EfTA does expect the students to learn as much as possible about a the career field, which will require a commitment on the part of the employer as well. The mentoring and on-the-job-training is essential for the intern’s career development.

“We match the student to the internship opportunity,” said Program Director for EfTA, Elaine Christian. “It’s important that it be mutually beneficial.”

The internships are structured as unpaid work experience. Companies may compensate the interns in some way, but that is not an expectation of EfTA.

The employers have the opportunity to interview students too, to ensure that the internship will be a good fit for both the intern and the employer,” said Christian.

EfTA is the same non-profit organization that presents the positive decision-making program, Future Focus (formerly Choices), to junior high school students, and coordinates the SCI://TECH Exposition for the Conroe Independent School District and several private schools, and is the largest science fair in the state of Texas.

SIP is the next level of development for high school students in preparing them for future leadership in business and the community. Employers interested in being part of that leadership training can obtain more information about the program by visiting the EfTA website at the link provided. For those with internship opportunities, the SIP registration form link is also provided.

For those employers who provide a beneficial internship opportunity, they often extend a permanent position to the intern, and are rewarded with a trained and loyal employee.
