“We didn’t rebound well, we didn’t take care of the ball well, missed a lot of free throws, stuff that you have to do to beat a good team. I was so proud of our guys, when we got down 10 (points), we came back and got it within one and we had a chance,” said Highlanders Head Coach Dale Reed.

Thomas scored three second-chance baskets in the fourth quarter, spurning an 8-0 Summer Creek over the final 1:57 of the game to lock up the win for Summer Creek.

The Woodlands (19-11, 6-5) was down 10 points midway through the fourth quarter, when the Highlanders charged on an 11-2 run, fueled by two 3-pointers from A.J. Bullard, another 3-pointer from Cameron Burkett and a driving lay-up by Romeo Wilbert. The run had the Highlander faithful on their feet on senior night, however, missed free throws and shots inside of two minutes in the game cost The Woodlands.

The Woodlands led a defensive struggle game in the first half as Summer Creek was without Paul Thomas for most of the first half after Thomas picked up his third personal foul in the first quarter. Thomas delivered in the second half, scoring all of his team-high 14 points, mostly on second and third chance opportunities.

The Highlanders got some momentum going after a Burkett completed a three-point play with a jumper and a foul, saw The Woodlands trail 35-29 at the end of the third quarter. Burkett had a game-high 21 points.

Summer Creek (19-10, 8-4) tried to pull away early in the fourth quarter after a Bryan Mitchell jumper and one gave the Bulldogs a 46-36 lead with 4:24 left in the game. But the Highlanders came out of a timeout very aggressive, going on an 11-2 run. Burkett’s 3-pointer started the run and defense forced a Bulldog turnover that resulted in a Wilbert fast break lay-up and suddenly the lead was cut in half at 46-41 with 3:38 left. The Highlanders then got two 3-pointers on consecutive possessions by Bullard to pull within 48-47 with 1:58 left, but couldn’t get the shots to fall after.

The Woodlands will close the regular season on Tuesday, February 17 at Kingwood with a 7pm tip.
