THE WOODLANDS, Texas – Every year in the U.S., over 10,000 people are killed in drunk driving accidents. Every 90 seconds, a person is injured by a drunk driver. One in three people, on average, will be involved in a drunk driving crash at some point in their lifetime. The statistics are grim, but Mothers Against Drunk Driving is fighting to change those numbers.

“We don’t want to lose any more innocent victims to this 100% preventable crime,” said Heather Smith, Special Events Manager for MADD in Southeast Texas. Walk Like MADD and MADD Dash in The Woodlands help raise money for MADD in Montgomery County and the surrounding area. Milstead Automotive is proud to sponsor Walk Like MADD and MADD Dash for the fourth year in a row; the event takes place this Saturday. “Funds raised are kept here to provide support and assistance for survivors of drunk driving crashes as well as the law enforcement heroes that help keep our roads safe,” Smith said.

MADD works with state and local legislators to adopt tougher laws. “We also support the development of new technology to determine whether a driver is above the legal limit and, if so, shutting down the vehicle if the driver is impaired due to alcohol,” Smith said.

Smith said, “We have a goal to raise $55,000 and with one week to go, we are at just over $20,000.” For this reason, additional walkers are needed. “Anyone can help,” Smith said. “We’re encouraging people to sign up now to walk as an individual or as part of a team.” Anyone who would like to help but is unable to attend can become a virtual walker and help with fundraising efforts.

The 5th annual Walk Like MADD and MADD Dash will be held on Saturday, October 3 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in Northshore Park in The Woodlands. For more information or to register, click here.
