THE WOODLANDS, Texas - The Woodlands College Park High School volleyball team took on the Summer Creek Lady Bulldogs at home on Tuesday night, looking for a rematch after losing to Summer Creek in four sets earlier this season. With a combination of tenacity and great teamwork, the Lady Cavs were able to defeat the Bulldogs in four sets: 18-25, 25-23, 25-15, and 26-24.

The first set would deem to be a challenge for the Lady Cavaliers. Although junior Linzy Woods and senior Kennedi Smith both had kills to start off the set, Summer Creek was soon up by five, 8-3. College Park was quick to bounce back however, and after kills from sophomore Emily Ross, senior Hannah Erwin, and freshman Audrey Penn, the Lady Cavs were down by just one, 10-9. What looked at what might be a comeback, Summer Creek went on to score five points in a row, increasing their lead to 15-9. Smith and Erwin both had more kills, including great blocking efforts from both Erwin and Woods. Ultimately, it was the Lady Bulldogs who come out on top in the first set, with a strong offensive presence from Regan Wright, Anota Adekunle, and Daron Danae. After College Park hit some attempts out of bounds, it was Summer Creek who would win the first set, 25-18.

The Lady Cavs had quite the comeback in the second set. After some great plays from both sides of the net, including kills from Erwin, Smith and Woods, the set was quickly tied up 10-10. College Park slowly began to increase their lead after a kill from junior Cassidy Winsman, a block from Woods and Erwin, as well as an Erwin kill. The Lady Cavs started to increase their intensity, both offensively and defensively. Woods had a another block and Smith would go on to quickly garner five more kills, giving College Park a 20-15 lead. After some miscommunication on College Park’s side of the net, Summer Creek was able to make quite a comeback and was soon only behind by one, 24-23. Penn sealed the deal for the Lady Cavs, however, and had a kill to give College Park a close second set win, 25-23.

In set three, the Lady Cavaliers found their groove, and displayed a great overall effort on the court. The home team scored the first five point of the set after kills from Erwin and Smith, as well as some miscommunication from Summer Creek. College Park libero, senior Savannah Rutledge ,played a great defensive game and was getting dig after dig, only aiding in her team’s efforts. Both Woods and Smith also showed great defense with many blocks throughout the set. Summer Creek didn't back down, however, and soon started to make a comeback after some forceful kills from Daron and Adekunle. Ahead 17-11, College Park kept up the high-energy pace after a great save from Rutledge led to a Smith Kill. The teamwork was apparent for the Lady Cavs. Sophomore Emily Ross and Winsman only added to the team’s list of kills, and soon College Park was up 20-12. Summer Creek would go on to score only three more points in the set. A kill from Penn gave the Lady Cavs match point, and after the Bulldogs hit the ball out of bounds, College Park won set three, 25-15, leading the match 2-1.

Set four was the closest set of the night, as both teams fought hard until the very end. Summer creek took a three-point lead after kills from #4, Daron, but College Park would also garner kills from Woods, Penn, and Erwin, as well as blocks from Smith and Woods, tying it up 7-7. The lead alternated throughout the set, not giving either team a lead of more than three points. Erwin set up some great kills for Smith and Penn, who were both on fire. After Summer Creek hits the ball out of bounds and an ace from Smith, it was tied up once again, 20-20. Summer Creek soon took the lead after two kills, and College Park called a timeout to regroup. After Summer Creek served out, College Park’s Winsman and Penn both had kills, and when Summer Creek hit the ball out, it was tied up 23-23. Woods had two more kills to bring the score to 25-24, and after an ace from sophomore CC Clausen, the Lady Cavs pulled it off and won the fourth set, 26-24. College Park defeated Summer Creek in four tight sets, winning the match 3-1.

College Park volleyball head coach Candice Collins was please with the team’s win after tough losses against The Woodlands and Oak Ridge last week.

“I think it was a good win for us considering how we played against them the last round," said Collins. "But I still feel like we’re struggling in some places that we could do better, but overall it was a good win at home. It was something that we needed to kind of give us a boost after last week, and so I was happy with it.”

The Lady Cavs are now 7-3 in district and will take on the Kingwood Mustangs this Friday, October 23, at Kingwood.
