THE WOODLANDS, Texas - Citing disappointing holiday sales, Macy’s will eliminate more than 4,500 positions as part of a restructuring plan to improve the department store's slumping sales, the company said Wednesday.

Restructuring could affect some positions as 4,500 jobs nationwide, will be eliminated by restructuring plan.

Macy's plan will include several cuts across its stores, offices, and call center, which includes the elimination of an average of three to four positions at each of the 770 Macy's and Bloomingdale's stores, in an effort to improve efficiency and productivity. Approximately 3,000 associates will be affected, but about half are expected to be placed in other positions. An additional 600 back-office positions will be eliminated as well, with about 150 people being reassigned elsewhere.

Macy's will also be offering a "voluntary separation opportunity" to approximately 165 senior executives who meet a certain age and service criteria. Not including those to be reassigned, the total number of layoffs is more than 2,100.

Macy's suffered a significant sales decline during the holiday season, despite holiday spending which was up 7.9 percent, according to MasterCard SpendingPulse. Reasons for the decline in sales was cited as two-fold: Unseasonably warm weather, affecting the sales of cold-weather gear...coats, sweaters, boots, and scarves. Lower spending by international tourists. Macy's CEO Terry Lundgren said this resulted in about 80% of their sales decline. Macy's was already in the midst of closing 36 stores this spring, which was announced last year. This will affect approximately another 2,600 employees. Of note, online orders increased by about 25% over last year in November and December. In a company statement, Lundgren said the company will be investing more in online and mobile experiences, and connecting those experiences to stores. Macy's shares jumped 4.8% in after-hours trading after the news release. Company shares are down more than 50% from their 2015 high, The Macy's stores slated to close this year:
