THE WOODLANDS, Texas - World renown philanthropist and advocate for women’s health and empowerment, Indrani Goradia, a Master Life Coach, author and speaker, presented an interactive workshop hosted by Vedas Medical Spa & Wellness Center on Wednesday, February 3. Titled “Saying a Positive NO,” Goradia guided participants through life’s most taxing stressors using a proven process.

The founder of Indrani’s Light Foundation, a nonprofit foundation dedicated to ending gender-based violence and empowering women around the world with the tools to live healthy and meaningful lives, Goradia coaches on both personal and spiritual growth, leadership, relationships, women’s issues, and work/life balance. In general, life coaching. Goradia presented her ‘Positive NO’ approach…YES! NO, YES!, explaining it this way…

“When you say ‘Yes’ to others reluctantly, you’re saying ‘No’ to yourself,” said Goradia. “To appease others, what are you denying yourself?”

Goradia said there are three reasons we don’t say “No”:

Accommodate others - This is somewhat deprecating, because we don’t feel our needs are as important as their needs.

Avoid confrontation - We want to appease the other person to avoid a disagreement, with someone whose relationship we value. But Goradia says to ask yourself, how much does the person value you, if they can’t accept your ‘No.’

Anger - We angrily capitulate to stop the badgering.

The way to apply the Positive No is to say “Yes” to what it you would like the outcome to be. Say “Yes” to yourself first. If this contradicts the other person’s request, you follow by saying “No” in a positive way...with a smile, emphasized Goradia. Do not provide justification for your “No.” Providing a reason allows the other person to counter with a suggestion or a recommendation to coerce your “No” to a “Yes” for them. Then follow with an alternative. This second “Yes” is what you can do for them, but on your terms, not their terms.

“Say yes to yourself first. When you are clear on the important value you believe in that will be threatened by not saying NO, say YES emphatically to protect this value,” said Goradia. “This is the first yes. You then create a supportive structure to build on it. Learning this very important skill will increase your personal strength.”

Goradia maintains that allowing people to manipulate you is a form of mental abuse, and this can be eliminated by saying a positive NO using the ‘YES! NO, YES!’ step process. In situations of physical abuse, it should always be applied to stop the cycle of abuse as she explains in this video.
