MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas - As the July 4th draws near, the Montgomery County Fire Marshal cautions county residents abouy the hazards of fireworks.

“Over 10,000 emergency room visits every year with fireworks involved. Forty-one percent involve sparklers, so even the most innocuous and innocent of fireworks can cause most of the problems we see,” said Fire Marshal Williams. “Small children are at most risk, ages 5 to 9; they shouldn’t be handling fireworks at all."

Even older adults are injured each year by fireworks. The largest percentage, 40 percent, are adults 25 to 44 years of age. The Fire Marshal indicated that this could be because the adults may be under the influence of alcohol when discharging the fireworks.

“Make sure that you have a sober adult supervising any use of fireworks,” added Fire Marshal Williams. (See entire public service announcement video.)

Other serious issues cited by the Fire Marshal that occur every holiday when the public discharges fireworks include grass fires, and the frightening of animals, both livestock and domestic pets.

“The number one complaint is the anxiety for our pets, our livestock,” said Williams. “Every year we see those issues...horses are injured, dogs are lost. We spend several days afterwards, a lot of folks do, trying to locate lost dogs.”

Fire Marshal Williams requested consideration to neighbors for the sake of their pets and livestock in the following interview on Lone Star Radio’s East Montgomery County News program. See video.

For the public’s safety, the Fire Marshal encourages the community to enjoy the firework displays by licensed professional pyrotechnic companies that are scheduled throughout the county on the 4th of July:

  • Lake Conroe will have a fireworks display at 9:15 p.m., that will be simulcast on KSTAR 99.7FM.
  • The Woodlands fireworks display will follow a festival at Town Green Park and Waterway Square from 6 to 10 p.m. This celebration will be simulcast on KRBE 104.1FM.
  • Roman Forest will also have a fireworks display after dark.

Note: Conroe Today will add any other fireworks shows scheduled, to this article. Private message the Conroe Today Facebook page to get the event added.

Areas banning fireworks in Montgomery County are as follows...see video. Fire Marshal Williams cautioned about going outside municipalities to shoot off fireworks.

"You can't just go out in the country and shoot off fireworks. You better make sure you're not on someone's land; you better have permission to be on that property," said Fire Marshal Williams.
