John Cooper seniors named National Hispanic Scholars; National Merit students also recognized

THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- The National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) selected Carina Masuelli, Gabriel Sanchez and Emilie Novoa from the John Cooper School Class of 2018 as National Hispanic Scholars.

Established in 1983, the National Hispanic Recognition Program is a College Board program that provides national recognition of the exceptional academic achievements of Hispanic/Latino high school seniors and identifies them for post-secondary institutions. In order to be eligible, students must be at least one-quarter Hispanic/Latino, as defined by the NHRP, meet the minimum PSAT cutoff score by state, and achieve a minimum grade point average requirement.

In addition, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation has recognized twelve students from The John Cooper School Class of 2018.

Carina Masuelli, also a National Hispanic Recognition Program student, is among 16,000 National Merit Semifinalists named from academically talented high school seniors from around the country and will continue in the competition for approximately 7,500 National Merit Scholarships, worth approximately $32 million, that will be offered next spring.

Seniors Obielumani Amudo, Jackson Banks, Nicole Beck, Preston Burnett, Jarod Cordes, Sarvani Desabhotla, Kyle Dunn, Kara O’Neal, Vinit Reddy, Payton Russell and Kathryn Tang were sent a Letter of Commendation and named Commended Students in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Commended Students are recognized for their exceptional academic promise based on results of taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
