THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- Natalie Saikowski Goertz and Roger Goertz, owners of Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Montgomery County, are among a class of 35 to recently graduate from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Citizen's Academy.

"With the national news reports on police brutality, racism, 'bad cops versus good cops,' shooting of officers and overall police negativity, I was interested in just how this negative news plays out in the area we live," Roger said. "From what I had witnessed locally versus what I was seeing nationally, there seemed to be a major difference. I wanted to know why, and understand if there is something I needed to do in making our county a better place to live."

Natalie said they wanted to learn more about Montgomery County Sheriff Rand Henderson's role in community policing.

"He has made a lot of positive changes since his first day in January 2017," Natalie said. "We wanted to know how he did that, and what we could do to help."

Natalie said she was most surprised at how many different departments, divisions and specialties make up the Sheriff's Office.

"Everyone sees patrol vehicles out there, but there's so much more than that," she said.

Sessions at the Citizen's Academy include Organized Crime, Gang Intelligence, Homeland Security, SWAT and Negotiations, K9 Operations, Family Violence, Crime Scene Investigation, Police Use of Force, Crime Stoppers, Crime Lab and more.

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office began the Citizen's Academy in 1997. The goal is to encourage a relationship between the Sheriff's Office and the community.

"There were so many interesting things I learned in the process," Roger said. "What amazed me is how extensive the training is at all levels of our local law enforcement – and it's not just a 'one time' process, it's ongoing. As a local businessman and careers in management in almost all levels, I was pleasantly surprised at the passion and dedication that was evident within the participants and presenters at each weekly session. I truly now know that they do in fact 'put their life on the line for us all,' each and every day."
