MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas -- The search for the next Conroe ISD superintendent is underway.

The board posted the position Jan. 8. Competition remains open until Jan. 28. Interviews will take place Feb. 6 – March 9, and a lone finalist will be announced March 20 before the board makes it official April 17. The new superintendent's first day at the helm of one of the fastest-growing districts in Texas will be June 4.

Dr. Don Stockton announced his retirement Aug. 14, 2017. He was appointed superintendent in 2003.

"I've had a great career, I've enjoyed everything I've done, I've enjoyed the community, the school district, and most of all -- the people," Stockton told Woodlands Online the day of the announcement. "This community is incredible. They've been so supportive. It's really hard to leave … but it's still the right time to leave."

Conroe ISD is the largest school district to ever be named Exemplary by the Texas Education Agency. It is the 13th largest district in Texas and the 65th largest in the country.
