John Cooper student writer captures national gold award for dramatic piece

THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- Maya Robles, a junior at The John Cooper School, earned a Gold Award and Senior Gabe Sanchez won a Silver Award in the national level of the 2018 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Competition. At the regional level, 12 Cooper Upper School students were recognized with 26 writing awards – 6 Gold Keys, 7 Silver Keys and 26 Honorable Mentions. Gold Key Award recipients at regionals move on to compete at the national level of the competition.

Robles is the first Cooper student to be awarded a Gold Medal in the Scholastic Writing Awards. She was awarded in the Dramatic Script category for “The Worst Kind of Goodbye.” Sanchez won a Silver Medal in the Humor category for “Do not compare me to a summer’s day.”

Awarded Gold Key Awards in the regional level of the Scholastic Writing Awards were: T.J. Gill in Short Story for “Snow Beyond the Scope,” Avery Nakahata in Poetry for “The Chaos of Arguments,” Maya Robles in Dramatic Script (see above) and in Poetry for “Poinsettia,” Gabriel Sanchez Ainsa in Humor (see above) and in Poetry for “Midnight,” and Zoe Tait in Short Story for “The Yellow Man.”

Cooper students who were awarded Silver Keys in the regional level of the Scholastic Writing Awards were: T.J. Gill and Carina Masuelli in Poetry; Maya Robles and Zoe Tait in Short Story; Caitlin Ross in Fiction; and Jessica Young in Sci-Fi and Fantasy. Awarded Honorable Mentions were Paige Cromley, Oriana Garcia, T.J. Gill (2), Carina Masuelli, Avery Nakahara, Brian Ross (2), Caitlin Ross, Payton Russell, Gabriel Ainsa, Zoe Tait and Jessica Young.
