MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas -- Lone Star College students received top awards at the recent National Model United Nations (NMUN) conference in New York.

The LSC-Joint Delegation consisting of students from LSC-Kingwood, LSC-Montgomery and LSC-Tomball received the Outstanding Delegation Award for the fourth year in a row. The LSC-CyFair, LSC-North Harris and LSC-University Park delegation was also recognized with a Distinguished Delegation award.

“Only 21 schools of the hundreds competing from around the world receive this honor,” said Stephen C. Head, Ph.D., LSC chancellor. “These Lone Star College students are a shining example of what student success looks like.”

LSC students were also recognized for Outstanding Position Papers and Outstanding Delegates in Committee.

The National Model United Nations advances understanding of the U.N. and contemporary international issues and has positively impacted the lives of thousands of student delegates. The Outstanding Delegation award is based on the delegation's ability to represent the positions of their assigned country, participate actively in committees, and follow the proper rules of procedure for diplomatic exchange.

The theme for this year’s conference was “Transforming Our World” and focused on how we can each positively contribute to change our world through our commitment to the objectives found with the Sustainable Development Goals.

“We must do more to enable young people to shape the decisions affecting their lives,” said António Guterres, United Nations secretary-general. “Your potential is the world’s potential. As you stand up for our shared values, the United Nations stands with you.

“For both Lone Star College delegations to be awarded is truly reflective of the caliber of our students and the guidance by dedicated faculty advisors,” said Katharine Caruso, Ph.D., LSC associate vice chancellor Honors and International Education.

More than 5,000 delegates from 130 countries participated in this year’s NMUN. Colleges represented at the event included the likes of St. Frances Xavier, Canada; Jilin University, China; Regents University London, Great Britain; The Hague University of Applied Sciences, The Netherlands; and Texas Christian University and Baylor University.
