CONROE, Texas -- The Conroe Independent School District Board of Trustees recognized the Assistance League of Montgomery County with the Patrons Influencing Education (PIE) Award at a recent meeting for its dedication to and support of the school children of Conroe ISD.

The Assistance League of Montgomery County has provided numerous resources to the children who attend CISD schools. Through their program, Operation School Bell, the chapter provides new clothing for students in need and books for schools. For the 2017-18 school year, Operation School Bell provided clothing to 1,760 Conroe ISD students in grades K through 12 spending over $176,000.

Additionally, the Assistance League’s Legacy of Literacy Program has donated $2,000 to each of 10 Conroe ISD schools who have economically disadvantaged students, but do not receive Title I funds. These funds are to be used to buy books for the school’s library or literacy libraries.

Dr. Chris Hines, Deputy Superintendent, introduced Janet Sheahan, President of the Assistance League of Montgomery County to the Board, and shared that the funds for these programs comes from the Assistance League’s Thrift Shop in Conroe as well as donations and grant monies.

Trustee John Husbands presented the group with a plaque and an actual pie as a token of the District’s appreciation.

“An unbelievable amount of money is distributed to those who need it in our community, not just to our school district. This is done by 100% volunteers. There is not a paid employee on the staff,” added Husbands. “I just commend them for what they’ve done for literacy and for what they’ve done for Montgomery County.”
